Salt was, and is, the first and greatest of preservers. 

Salis Artisan Foods, established in Ballarat in 2020, came about as a labour of love. 

After spending fifteen years professionally cooking in reputable kitchens, I had noticed that the average person did not have easy access to the range of delicious condiments, spice blends and sauces which were available to me in commercial kitchens.

At Salis, we place the emphasis on quality natural ingredients, without unnecessary processes or artificial nastiness. We strive to bring you top shelf products that are slightly left of centre.

Unique and sophisticated flavours which respect their humble origins in fresh produce.


SPICE BLENDS

Designed for any occasion, they can be used instantly, but are best left to marinate overnight. Ideal for barbeque, grilling, smoking or roasting. They can be used as a seasoning for chips or to add that missing punch in a stew, braise, soup or gumbo.


CONDIMENTS

A sauce, a spread, a little of this or that. Whether added intentionally or absentmindedly, they are the flavours which can bring your food to life. Think mustard on a rye sandwich or bbq sauce on ribs. Condiments are the small details on the dinner plate which punch above their weight and tie all the elements together.  


JAMS

A lifetime ago I worked a long time in a renowned cafe in Fitzroy’s back streets. It was here I learnt the art of jam - the complexities, but also the possibilities. Along the way, picking up the occasional accolade.  

Salis offers jam for grown ups, using the finest ingredients. Our jams are designed to get the most out of the fruit by backing way off on the sugar and balancing subtle, complimentary flavours.


PICKLES

The world of pickles is a fascination, as just about anything can be pickled. But in day to day life we rarely encounter anything other than a substandard cornichon or burger pickle. 

Pickling is an artform that began as a way of preserving the last of the season’s excess crop, and ensuring that nothing went to waste. Born of necessity, and using the most basic ingredients - vinegar and salt - pickling is once again becoming mainstream, as we embrace a simpler way of life. 

Salis offers three of our favourite snacking pickles which can be enjoyed by themselves, with cheeses and meats or as part of a salad.
